In 2017, Jim Borowski (WQW’s recently-elected Vice Chair of the Board of Directors) told the Community Engagement Manager about a free veteran-specific on-line training resource that might be of interest to volunteers. The PsychArmor Institute exists to support those who engage the military community, including the more than 62 million Americans who volunteer each year. Thanks to the generosity of the Bob Woodruff Foundation, PsychArmor offers FREE, on-demand courses specifically for non-profit organizations and volunteers. All PsychArmor courses are evidence-based, clinically informed, and developed by national recognized subject matter experts.
During the first quarter of 2018, four WQW staff members completed PsychArmor curriculum featuring topics created specifically for nonprofits that serve veterans. Courses cover a variety of topics including “15 Things Veterans Want You to Know” and “Communication Skills with Veterans.” For the first time, all 2018 program volunteers have been asked to participate in PsychArmor courses. 100% participation provides continuing education opportunities for volunteers and ensures a more positive warrior experience.
